Award Application How-To
Students with majors or minors in Humanities and/or Classics are eligible to apply for the following awards and prizes:
D. N. Robinson Prize.
Seniors (with a declared HMCL major) who plan to continue study in the Classics or the Humanities (or a closely related field) immediately after graduation should notify any member of the department or the department secretary in writing of what they plan to study, where, and for which degree. The department will consider granting significant initial financial support for graduate study, depending on the quality of the student’s work in the Humanities-Classics department.
Herbst Prize.
Sophomores or higher (usually not seniors, but they may apply) who have declared the major or minor in Humanities or Classics, and who plan to study and travel during the summer may request HMCL Herbst support. To apply for this prize, please submit the following detailed information in writing no later than the first week in April to any member of the department or the department secretary. Earlier is better.
-
Program of study to which you are applying (or an itinerary and schedule of activities), copies of available brochures, or other printed materials about your trip). Usually, we support programs where the principal language is not English. These programs may be literary, archaeological, historical, etc.
-
Your purpose in pursuing this program and its relation to your OWU HMCL major.
-
An itemized budget: total costs including airfare, tuition, food and lodging, other related travel expenses.
-
The amount you are requesting from the Humanities-Classics department. Also indicate other funding sources that you have approached. We generally cannot fully fund such overseas travel.
-
The manner in which you would like to share the results of your travel and study with the department community upon your return (for instance, a talk, a slide presentation, newsletter materials, etc.).
Questions should be directed to the HMCL Chairperson.
